Berlin Metropolis

The second exhibition in Dr. Olaf Peters’s trilogy for Neue Galerie New York, Berlin Metropolis: 1918–1933 explored the extraordinary creative energy and growing instability of Berlin during the Weimar Republic. Bringing together some 300 works spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, photography, architecture, film, and fashion, the exhibition captured a city transformed by Dada, mass culture, the “New Woman,” and radical experimentation. Working with my creative director Richard Pandiscio, I designed the exhibition and catalogue to reflect the density, speed, and visual collision of metropolitan life, creating an immersive portrait of Berlin as restless, sophisticated, and exhilarating, even as the political forces that would bring the Weimar era to an end gathered beneath the surface.
